Aster Magonia offers a visit to the underground wineries of Medina del Campo, exploring its viticultural heritage and the significance of wine in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Aster Magonia invites you to explore the underground wineries of Medina del Campo, beginning at the Palacio Real Testamentario. This visit includes a historical introduction to the region's winemaking tradition, followed by a journey through two unique wineries, each full of surprises. During the tour, you'll learn about the underground heritage of the Villa de las Ferias and the wine's significance in the Tierras de Medina region during the 16th and 17th centuries. In the early 16th century, Medina del Campo emerged as a vital wine production centre. According to the Cadastre of the Marqués de la Ensenada, in 1752, the town boasted 53 wineries and 140 cellars housing around 2 million litres of wine in 614 vats by the mid-18th century. These cellars were located in the old outskirts of the town, an area that today encompasses Avenida Portugal, Plaza Mayor de la Hispanidad, and several narrow streets in the historic centre. Factors like the arrival of phylloxera, demographic growth, urban development, and the economic rise of other production sectors led to the decline of wine architecture, causing it to be repurposed for various uses. Through these visits, Medina del Campo aims to revive one of its most authentic and traditional tourist resources: the underground wineries. This experience promises to provide insight into a vital aspect of the region’s cultural heritage.
Duration of approximately 100 minutes.
